The Biggest Wave Ever Surfed

A new potential world record for the biggest wave ever surfed occurred at iPraia do Norte, Nazare, Portugal. Carlos Burle, from Brazil, has ridden a wave that some estimate is at least 100 feet tall.

Shawn Dollar has just broken the world record for traditional paddle-in surfing on a wave that measured 61 feet at Cortes Banks, Southern California.

According to the Guiness Book of World Records, big wave surfer Garrett McNamara now holds the title. The wave was estimated to be 78 feet. This wave was also recognized by Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards as indeed the biggest. McNamara, who is a pro surfer, accomplished this feat on a beast of a wave in November, 2011, off the coast of Nazare, Portugal. He was 44 years old. The previous record was held by Mike Parson. Parson in 2008 rode a monster 77 foot wave at Cortes Bank, off the coast of Southern California.
